

Micah Layne — Flutist | Educator | Flute Technician
Micah Layne is a versatile American flutist, flute technician, and educator originally from Maui, HawaiÊ»i. Known for his deep musicality and commitment to craft, Micah’s career spans performance, education, and professional instrument care. Throughout his musical journey he has performed in a variety of settings and styles, bringing both classical precision and expressive artistry to every project.
Micah’s early musical roots in HawaiÊ»i laid the foundation for a lifetime of exploration in music and performance. He spent several formative years in Los Angeles, where he trained and worked in flute repair with Flutacious under Cynthia Kelley, servicing instruments for prominent players including members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Los Angeles Opera. Micah is certified in multiple professional repair systems — Muramatsu, Straubinger, Powell — and he is notably the first American trained in Japan in the Uesawa Padding System, reflecting his dedication to technical excellence and instrument longevity.
In addition to his work as a performer and technician, Micah offers flute lessons and workshop instruction, drawing on his broad experience to guide students at all levels toward better tone, technique, and musical understanding.
Most recently, Micah was featured on WFYI / Classical Music Indy’s broadcast and streaming programming in Indianapolis, where he shared a deeply personal interview about his musical roots, his experiences living and working in Los Angeles, and his artistic philosophy. The interview highlighted his passion for community engagement, his perspectives on performance and practice, and his ongoing contributions to the classical music scene in Indiana and beyond.
Micah continues to perform, teach, and serve fellow musicians through his technical expertise, embodying a lifelong commitment to the art and craft of flute playing.
Micah Layne has trained a generation of students who have gone on to successful careers inside and out of the musical world. Former students have been accepted to the Juilliard School of Music, Oberlin, and UCLA among other great programs.
